APN News & Media (APN) is an Australia-based media company engaged media operations like newspaper publishing, outdoor advertising and radio broadcasting. It is also in the publishing of directories both in online and printed formats. APN was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on the 7th of May 1992. Its average annual revenue reaches approximately AUD$1.2 million. Its headquarters is located in Sydney, Australia and to date; around 5,600 people are employed in the company. APN News Media operates mainly in three business segments: Publishing, Outdoor and Broadcasting.
The Publishing segment is comprised of the New Zealand National Publishing (NZNP) and regional publishing. The regional publishing is engaged in the publishing of 23 daily newspapers in the region and over 100 non-daily publications in Australia as well as New Zealand. NZNP on the other hand is comprised of the New Zealand Herald, New Zealand Magazines and The Aucklander. In Australia, the segment serves Northern New South Wales and the Queensland. APN, under this segment is also engaged in the operation of the information web businesses as well as the leading news both in Australia and New Zealand.
The Outdoor segment of APN News Media is engaged in different advertising categories like street furniture, posters, super sites, as well as the transit. This segment is also in charged of the operation of the company's outdoor businesses in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Included in the major outdoor businesses of APN under this segment are SuperSites, Transit, Kurnia, Street Furniture and Rainbow.
The Broadcasting segment of APN manages the investments of approximately 120 radio stations in New Zealand and approximately 12 metropolitan radio stations all across Australia. It is also in charged of the management of Australian Radio Network (ARN), a joint venture with a USA radio broadcaster, the Clear Channel Communications. Four out of the five radio stations in Auckland are also part of the operations of the APN's broadcasting segment.
APN News & Media Company History
Australia Provincial Newspaper was formed when free press was launched to the developing parts of Australia in the 1850s. It was later organized in 1968 and was called Provincial Newspaper.
Independent Newspaper of Ireland acquired the Provincial Newspaper. It was named Australia Provincial Newspaper when the company joined the Australian Stock Exchange in 1992. Because of its many businesses divisions, the name was later altered to APN News and Media.
APN joined the radio sector and outdoor advertising sector in 1995. In 2001, it cost APN $809 million to acquire the Wilson & Horton with The New Zealand Herald, 40 non-daily newspaper and magazines, nine regional daily newspaper, commercial and security printing operation, outdoor advertising and one-third interest in TRN. In 2002, the company got 19 premium sites and neon sky signs and bought the Wairarapa Times-Age in New Zealand.
The company got Adspace in 2005 after joining the New Zealand Exchange in 2004. Style Magazines was acquired by the company in August 2006. Citydreams was traded in October 2006 and Yourbiz TRN Holdings followed the next month. In January 2007, Independent News & Media, Providence Equity and The Carlyle Group offered a plan to gain the company through the pattern of arrangement of $6.05 per share.
