Consolidated Rutile (CRT) is a mineral sands exploration and production Company. Its operations involve the exploration, mining, processing and marketing of rutile, zircon and ilmenite. The Company’s principal production operations are held on North Stradbroke Island, off the coast of Brisbane, Queensland. The core products of the Company include titanium minerals in the form of ilmenite and rutile; and zircon. Titanium minerals are used in the manufacturing of a range of items such as paint pigments, protective coatings, titanium metal and welding electrodes. Zircon is used in ceramic glazes, refractories and wear-resistant products. CRL listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on 30 June, 1964. CRL operates two mines on North Stradbroke Island: the Yarraman Mine and the Enterprise Mine for the extraction of mineral sands. CRT operates a Dry Mill facility for processing the mineral at Pinkenba. The Company’s geographical segments include Australia, North America, Europe and Asia. The Company produces around 70,000 tonnes of rutile, 50,000 tonnes of zircon and 150,000 tonnes of ilmenite per year, which are exported to more than 33 countries, including the United Kingdom, the US and Japan. The Company is well reputed for its best practice environmental management practices throughout the world. CRT is seeking exciting new business opportunities both on and off North Stradbroke Island focusing on optimising the island’s resources, forming industrial mineral resource partnerships as well as targeting expansion through acquisition.
Consolidated Rutile History
CRT was registered in 1963 and it listed on the ASX in July 1964. The Company began mining on North Stradbroke Island (NSI) in 1966 and commissioned its first dredge and concentrator to mine the Bayside orebody on the west coast of NSI in 1978. It started mining on a second orebody called Gordon at the southern end of the island in 1985. CRT closed in 1995 due to rebellion in Sierra Leone and sold its operations in 2001 there for US$3.25M cash. In 1998 Iluka Resources Limited acquired controlling interest in the Company. The Company’s Gordon mine was relocated to the Yarraman orebody at the northern end of the island in 1999. In 2003 CRL made discovery of the Glossy Black Cockatoo during pre-mine studies. It developed Ibis Canal in 2003 in order to avoid impact on lagoons in the region. In 2004, it commissioned enterprise mine operations. In 2005 CRT established the Environmental Working Group and the Community Peer Support Group.
