Molopo Energy (MPO) is an exploration company focusing on the development of coalbed methane (CBM) projects in Queensland (QLD) and New South Wales (NSW). The company also has oil and gas projects in China, South Africa, Canada and the United States. Its key projects are located in the Bowen Basin, QLD; the Gloucester Basin, NSW; West Virginia in the USA; and Free State in South Africa.The company was listed on the Australian stockmarket (ASX) in December 1986. Its head office is situated in Melbourne.

The company has expanded its operations into the US gas market to take advantage of the higher gas prices in that region. MPO entered into a joint venture, covering a gas project in Mason County, West Virginia, which contains multiple oil and gas targets in sandstones and coal.

Oil is sold to the nearest refinery at the spot price, while gas tends to be sold on long-term contracts with price escalators linked to inflation. Because of the global nature of the oil market, every oil producer is a competitor. For gas producers, competition is much more localised and depends on pipeline access to markets.
