Symex Holdings History
SYM history can be traced back to 1860 when J Kitchen & Sons was established. During 1860 to 1880, the company expanded and diversified into tallow rendering, and the manufacturing of soap, soda crystals, baking powder, Stearine and Glycerine. In 1924 the company completed the merger with Lever Brothers and eventually became the part of conglomerate Unilever in 1930. In 1956 the Company was renamed to Unilever Australia. In 1971 the Company re-established J Kitchen & Sons as the Oleo Product manufacturing division of Unilever. In 1978, the Company changed its name to Unichema Australia, and became part of the Unichema International group of companies. Unichema Australia obtained an ISO9002 accreditation in 1991. Unichema sold its business to ICI Plc in July 1997. In late 1999, SYM was established as a result of a management buy-out of the Uniqema business from its former parent company ICI Plc. SYM floated on the ASX on 29 August 2000. It purchased the business of Pental Products in March 2003 and acquired some Unilever soap brands in early 2004. It acquired DCS International Pty Ltd, an importer and distributor of diversified chemicals and soap products in 2007.
