As the 21 days of negotiations expire, Qantas (QAN) says they are committed to reaching an agreement with the Transport Workers Union (TWU), and the pilots' and aircraft engineer's union by midnight tonight, but the three unions believe otherwise. Qantas Spokeswoman Olivia Wirth said, "We're very much committed to these negotiations and we hope that we can come to a settlement."
Over 6000 domestic passengers are expected to be affected by delays due to today’s strike by Qantas' ground staff over pay and conditions.
Qantas said 27 flights had been delayed—by 15 minutes on average—and 28 flights had been cancelled. Qantas spokesman Luke Enright said flights were expected to return to normal by lunchtime.
“Things are going better than expected,” said Enright. “About 90 per cent of our flights (under the new schedule) are departing on time, which is great.”
Worker's from BHP Billiton (ASX:BHP) plans for strike action this week. The action may result to further inflation of the already high priced coal. The strike will take place in the night shift at the mines run by the Billiton-Mitsubishi Alliance in Queensland. Two more day shift stoppages will occur early next week.
BHP Billiton (ASX:BHP) workers at Queensland's Mitsubishi coal mines have agreed to go ahead with industrial action. Up to 4,000 workers could participate in the strike which could happen as early as next week, according to an officer from the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).
Pilots prepare for an industrial action against Qantas (ASX:QAN). The Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) filed a complaint in Fair Work Australia today, saying that they want to prevent the outsourcing of pilots' jobs.
The association filed for a ballot and when approved, it will be the first time since 1996 that the pilots' union have taken industrial action.
Fairfax Media's (FXJ) controversial move to outsouce sub-editing work and drop 82 jobs have roused the ire of its journalists, who vowed to fight the decision albeit without industrial action. The staff is planning to continue their public campaign, coming to the decision at a meeting between the union committees.
Pilot strike may ground planes and cause delay for Qantas (ASX:QAN). Union members stated in a letter that they will stop work on Friday from 8am to 9am, which is just the first step to an industrial action.
Pilots and engineers are demanding for job security that Qantas cannot give. According to Pilot sources, negotiations have been made that was able to resolves some issues, but both parties are not able to make an agreement over job security.
Possible industrial action threatens Qantas (ASX:QAN) after its engineers complained over job security and compensation. The airline's 1600 engineers announced today that the strike will begin this week, with a one-hour strike expected between 8am and 9am on Friday.
According to the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), negotiations with the airline this morning in the presence of a Fair Work Australia judge “hit a brick wall” and failed to fix issues.
