Arc Halts Operations After Violent Protests in Indonesia


Shares of Indonesian focused gold explorer Arc Exploration (ARX) fell by 20 percent or 0.2 cents at 0.8 cents this morning as it halts some of its operations after the deaths of two people in a gold exploration protest in Bima, East Sumbawa. Gold exploration protesters blockaded the local port of Sape and clashed with the police as the latter tries to reopen the port on Christmas Eve, resulting to the two fatalities.

Fairfax Staff Protests Over Outsourcing Move


250 employees from The Age protested against Fairfax (ASX:FXJ). The company has decided to outsource sub-editing work, cutting down a dozen jobs in the process. Another 150 workers form Fairfax also protested in Sydney.

Fairfax's outsourcing move will cost 38 job cuts for The Age. A spokeswoman from the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance said that they haven't given up, stating "At the moment we are focusing on getting the word out to the broader community.''

Lynas' Processing Plant Threatened by Protests


Lynas Corporation's (ASX:LYC) rare earth processing plant in Malaysia is threatened by protests due to concerns of radiation pollution. Local residents are concerned that health problems caused by Mitsubishi refinery which closed back in 1992 might happen again. Due to this, the Malaysian government has announced that it will create a panel to review the $220 million plant that is going to be constructed in Gebeng, an industrial zone in Pahang.
