Find out the upcoming dividends in Australia in our calendar. If you are a shareholder of a company you are entitled to a share of the company's earnings and profits. A dividend payout is a way to reward shareholders for investing their money in that company.

Investors usually pick shares either on the basis of possible future capital growth, possibility of payment of dividends and size of the payout or all these criteria. Quite a few public companies on the ASX payout dividends to shareholders twice a year: one is usually marked as an interim dividend usually given out in the company's half year statement, and a final dividend at end of financial year. However, not all companies pay dividends and choose to reinvest their earnings and some may pay a dividend either more or less frequently or none at all. Sometimes a company may issue a special dividend for special events.

Ex-dividend date

The ex dividend date occurs four business days before the company's Record Date. To be entitled to a dividend a shareholder must have purchased the shares before the ex dividend date. If you purchase shares on or after that date, the previous owner of the shares (and not you) is entitled to the dividend.
A company's share price may move up as the ex dividend date approaches and then fall after the ex dividend date.

Pay date or Date Payable

The Date Payable is the date on which a company's dividend is paid to shareholders. The payment date is the day when the dividend cheques will actually be mailed to the shareholders of a company or credited to brokerage accounts.

Franking

Dividends paid to shareholders by Australian resident companies are taxed under a system known as ‘imputation’. It is called an imputation system because the tax the company pays is imputed, or attributed, to the shareholders. The tax paid by the company is allocated to shareholders by way of franking credits attached to the dividends they receive.
