Western Areas NL (WSA) is a global nickel mining and exploration Company. Forrestania Nickel Project is the principal asset of the Company. The Company holds a 100% interest in Forrestania Nickel Project, situated 400 kilometers east of Perth, Western Australia. Western Areas NL listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on 28th of July, 2000. WSA is also listed on TSX. Flying Fox is a major nickel mine at Forrestania, containing high-grade nickel ore deposits. The Mineral Resources at Flying Fox amounted to 1.5 million tones, at an average grade of 6.1% nickel, comprising around 105,000 tonnes of nickel. The Company is expecting a total targeted production of about 150,000 tonnes of contained nickel at Flying Fox during 2008, through its ongoing drilling operation. During fiscal 2008, the Company was principally focused on the development and mining of the Flying Fox Nickel mine together with the exploration for nickel sulphides, platinum group metals and gold. The Company holds an 18% interest in Mustang Minerals Corp., with 75% interest in AOA Kola Mining and 78% interest in Polar Gold Pty Ltd. WSA is also focused on the development of several other discoveries at the Forrestania Nickel Project which include a mine at Diggers South, a mine at Spotted Quoll and a mine at New Morning. The development of its Cosmic Boy mine is in progress. From 2011, the Company’s annual targeted production of nickel from its five operating mines at Forrestania Nickel Project is more than 35,000 tonnes.
Western Areas NL History
Western Areas NL was initially listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on July 28, 2000. Since listing, the principal focus of the Company is on the nickel exploration and production. The Company primarily operates in WA, but its operations are also held in Canada. The Company announced the discovery of the high-grade Spotted Quoll deposit on October 16, 2007. It announced a doubling of the Spotted Quoll deposit on September 2, 2008. The company was listed on the S&P/ASX 200 in July 2, 2007.
