ASX Indices

The All Ordinaries (XAO) was created in January 1980 is the oldest index of shares in Australia. When it was first established, it began with a base index of 500, and with the index around 5,000 in 2017, means the value of stocks in the All Ords have increased tenfold since inception.

On 3 April 2000, the All Ordinaries was restructured to consist of the 500 largest companies by market capitalisation. The market cap of all the companies within the index covers 95% of the value of all shares listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).
