Westfarmers Limited (WES) is a diversified industrial company engaged in the processing and distribution of gas, coal mining, building materials and home and garden improvement products retailing, general merchandise, supermarkets, fuel and liquor outlets, office and home improvement supplies, electricity generation, chemicals and fertilisers supply, insurance and distribution of safety products. WES was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on the 15th of November 1984. Its average annual revenue reaches approximately $9 billion out of its issued capital of approximately $300,000. Its headquarters is located in Perth, Australia and to date; around 30,000 people are employed in the company. Westfarmers Limited operates mainly in six business segments: the home improvement segment, company’s chemicals and fertilisers segment, energy segment, insurance segment, industrial and safety segment, company’s other segment.

The home improvement segment of Westfarmers Limited is comprised of Houseworks and Burning. This segment has its operations through a network of traditional stores, superstores and warehouses. Houseworks manages 14 WA Salvage stores and 2 Houseworks stores in Western Australia while Burning is a building materials and home and garden improvement products retailer. The chemical and fertilisers segment of WES is comprised of two companies – Australian Gold Reagents and CSBP, both are subsidiaries of WES. WES’ energy segment is comprised of a power business, three gas businesses, three coal businesses and other support activities.

The insurance division of Westfarmers is comprised of an insurance software developer two premium-funding businesses, three general insurance companies. The insurance segment of Westfarmers focuses on the engineering, safety, and industrial supplies distribution both in Australia and New Zealand. The other segments of the company are comprised of plantation businesses and investment banking. Through this segment, Westfarmers acquired 50% interest from the Gresham Partners Group. Gresham Partners Group is the holding company of Westfarmers for all its investment banking services.

Wesfarmers Limited (WES) Company History

In 1914, Westfarmers Limited was established as a farmers’ cooperative and became a public company in 1984. In 1985, the company acquired Gresham Partners’ 50 percent of interest in their investment bank. Shortly after, they acquired CSBP and Farmers. Also, Charlie Carter chain of supermarket was sold to the company and acquired 9.7 percent interest in Bunnings. And then, the company acquired an Australian coal company, the Western Collieries two years later.

In the 90s, the company acquired several companies. In 1994, they gained total control of Bunnings after they have sold the Masters Dairy. During the year 2003, they acquired Paykel, New Zealand and the Australian and New Zealand’s Lumley Insurance Groups operations.

In 1996, 50 percent stake of Total Western Transport was acquired by the company from Westrail. Charlie Center Supermarket was sold in 1998. And two years after, Westrail Freight Business was acquired by the company through the Group of Australian Railroad and the acquisition of 65 percent of Statewest power and the total control of Howard Smith a year after.

The gas subsidiary of the company, Wesfarmers LPG and Alinta Sales made a contract for the Alinta to Wesfarmers gas extraction plant gas supplying at Kwinana. The contract provided the company with a firm transportation capacity continuation and exclusive gas extraction in the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
