Further Reading
Air New Zealand Limited (AIZ) is an international and domestic airline group. It provides transportation of passengers and cargo on scheduled airline services within and to and from New Zealand and as well as to and from Australia, the South West Pacific, Asia, North America and the United Kingdom. International operations are carried out independently and through codesharing. Air New Zealand was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) on 1st October 1997. It is also a full member of the Star Alliance network which is one of the world's largest multi-airline alliance. This membership in the Star Alliance has greatly enhanced Air New Zealand's global reach, resulting in the exposure and recognition of AIZ in markets where otherwise AIZ has had minimum sales and marketing presence.
Air New Zealand is also engaged in providing engineering and ground handling services. Its subsidiaries extend to booking systems, travel wholesaling and retailing services.
Air New Zealand History
AIZ commenced operations in 1940 as Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL). It changed its name to Air New Zealand in 1965. Air New Zealand Limited was owned by the New Zealand government. It was privatised and then listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 1989. AIZ acquired 50% of Ansett Holdings in September 1996, and in June 2000 it acquired the remaining 50% of it. In March 1999, Air New Zealand acquired a full membership of the Star Alliance Group. Singapore Airlines became a 25% shareholder in Air New Zealand in August 2000.
